108 Fine Art Exhibition

24 February 2012

Harrogate College Arts students showcased their work at the 108 Fine Art exhibit recently.

BA (Hons) Applied Creative Design Visual Arts students work includes film, installation, painting and ceramics in a diverse and innovative approach.

The exhibition is the result of the students working in collaboration with Harrogate art dealer and gallery owner Andrew Stewart. The project involved making individual works in response to the historic grandeur of the imposing 1820 Georgian house on Cold Bath Road.

The house has undergone extensive restoration work with the completion of the house now housing a permanent art gallery showcasing a permanent collection of artists including the late Leeds artist Joash Woodrow, as well as exhibiting works by young contemporary artists including Paul Reid, Anna King and Yukako Sakakura.

Andrew Stewart said: “It has been a privilege to work with this year’s BA students. Working with such talented and creative individuals has been very rewarding and artistically stimulating. During the past few months the experience of being allowed to follow the artists through the development of their ideas, has confirmed that contemporary art is alive and flourishing in Harrogate, and who knows what great potential artists of tomorrow may already be on our doorstep.”

Student Sarajayne Murray said: “Working on this project/brief has been a fascinating and very important journey for us as students, an opportunity for us to develop as artists and use the skills we have learned within our studies at Harrogate College.
The gallery/house is steeped in history and has inspired each and every one of us in different ways. It’s been intriguing to see how as a group of artists we all began with the same brief from our client and yet our individual styles, methods and the materials we use means that our original ideas have manifest themselves into a curious melting pot of unique and very individual works despite them being part of the same project/exhibition.”
