Students’ charity work benefits RNLI

03 February 2012

Harrogate College students have taken part in a challenge to raise money for the RNLI.

BTEC Diploma in Vocational studies students took part in the challenge inspired from the BBC programme ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is’ to buy goods and sell them on for a profit.

The students sourced 10 items from local charity shops including a bow tie, necklace, and book of Treasure Island.

Many of the students had never visited a charity shop and were inspired by the range of affordable items available. The challenge developed the student’s financial management skills by managing a budget, tracking spend with a spread sheet, calculating profit and negotiating with suppliers and working together as a team.

Closed bids raised over £60 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Student Amanda Kershaw said: “We worked as a team for our business group unit, each of us had a different job role and supported each other with the task. I have learnt about money during the project and even tried to haggle for a discount on a pair of red shoes I bought from the charity shop. We chose the RNLI as they save people’s lives and make a difference to communities across the UK.

Tutor Diane Bainbridge said: All of the students have worked very hard on this task to achieve two things – firstly to pass the ‘Working as a Group’ unit and gain 4 credits towards their Diploma in Vocational Studies. While achieving this they have raised funds for the very worthy cause of RNLI , as always with enthusiasm, knowing that the money they helped to raise goes to help save lives at sea and to a charity who are dependent on public donations and volunteers.
